Erie’s waterfront was historically an important port and industrial area, supporting shipbuilding, railroads, coal, grain, fishing, and other industries. Beginning particularly in the late 20th century, the city and Port Authority began transforming parts of the industrial waterfront into a mixed recreational, tourism, and commercial district.
