The Rideau Canal, completed in 1832, is a historic 202-kilometre waterway connecting Ottawa and Kingston, Ontario. Built under the supervision of Lieutenant-Colonel John By, it was originally designed for military purposes following the War of 1812. As railways replaced canal transportation, it gradually became a recreational waterway.
