St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Alma is the church that James Scarth Gale (1863–1937), the first Canadian missionary to Korea, and his family attended. He graduated from the University of Toronto in 1888 and arrived in Korea that winter. He spent 40 years(1888-1928) there as an educator, pastor, and translator. Above all, his greatest achievement was translating the Bible into Korean and introducing Korean culture to Western society.
