The Pioneer Tower was built in 1926 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the arrival of the first Mennonite settlers to the area. Joseph Sherk (1769-1855) was among the first Dutch Mennonite families who migrated from Pennsylvania to in what was to become Waterloo Township in the spring of 1800, seeking religious freedom and affordable farmland.
