The building was originally constructed in 1853 as the town’s first municipal hall. Over the decades, as Woodstock grew, the building served as the town’s first market, first public assembly hall, first fire hall, first police lock-up, first municipal offices, and first mayor’s office.
In 1955, the building was designated a National Historic Site of Canada, recognized for its value as “a fine example of colonial adaptation of a British town hall”.
