The building originally opened in 1909 as the Toronto Public Library’s Central Reference Library. It was the largest Carnegie library in Ontario. As the collection grew, the library eventually outgrew the building, and in 1977 the Toronto Reference Library relocated. After the move, the University of Toronto acquired the building.
